Sugars Flashcards
What is a monosaccharide?
The monomers that make up carbohydrates
What are the 2 types of glucose?
- Alpha (α)
2. Beta (ß)
What is a disaccharide?
2 monosccharides joined together
How are the 2 monosccharides joined together?
Through a condensation reaction
What type of bond forms between the 2 monosccharides?
A Glycosidic bond
What has to be released for the glycosidic bond to be made?
Water molecule
Give examples of 2 disaccharides.
- Sucrose
2. Lactose
What is the test for reducing sugars?
The benedict’s test
What does it tell us when the sample with the Benedict’s reagent stays blue?
That no reducing sugars are present
What does it tell us when the sample with the Benedict’s reagent turns green, yellow, orange or red?
That reducing sugars are present
What can you add to the experiment to test for Non-Reducing sugars?
- Dilute hydrochloric acid
2. Neutralise with sodium hydrogencarbonate
What monosaccharides make up Sucrose?
- Glucose
2. Fructose
What monosaccharides make up Lactose?
- Glucose
2. Galactose
What monosaccharides make up Maltose?
- Glucose
2. Glucose
