Proteins Flashcards
What are the monomers of protein called?
Amino Acids
What is formed when 2 amino acids join together?
A Dipeptide
What is formed when MORE than 2 amino acids join together ?
A Polypeptide
What makes up an amino acid?
- A Carboxyl group (COOH)
- An Amino group
- R group
What is special about the R group?
It is always different in each amino acid
What reaction joins amino acids together?
Condensation Reaction
What type of BOND is formed between amino acids?
Peptide bonds
How are dipeptides and polypeptides broken down?
Through a hydrolysis reaction
What are the 4 types of protein structures?
- Primary Structure
- Secondary Structure
- Tertiary Structure
- Quaternary Structure
What is the test for Proteins called?
The Biuret test
How is the Biuret test carried out?
- Solution NEEDS to be ALKALINE
- about 5-10 Drops of sodium hydroxide solution are added (Without being shaken)
- Then 5-10 drops of copper sulfate solution is added
How do we know that the Biuret test turned out positive?
If parts of the solution turn purple (this shows a protein is present)
