Sugars Flashcards
what are the two types of sugars
monosaccharides and disaccharides
whats a hexose sugar
a monosaccharide with 6 carbon atoms in each molecule
what are monosaccharides
monomers that make carbohydrates
examples of monosaccharides
glucose
fructose
galactose
what are the types of glucose
alpha and beta
a-glucose and b-glucose are …
isomers (same molecular formula but different structural formula)
how are disaccharides formed
when two monosaccharides join via condensation reactions
whats the bond called that forms when two monosaccharides join
glycosidic bond
how is maltose made
alpha + alpha
glucose + fructose = ….
sucrose
how is lactose formed
glucose + galactose
describe the test for reducing sugars
-heat sample with benedict’s reagent
- if sample stays blue > no reducing sugar present
- if sample forms green>yellow>orange>brick red ppt > reducing sugar present
describe test for non reducing sugars
- heat sample with dilute HCL and then neutralise with sodium hydrogen carbonate
- heat with benedict’s reagent
- if sample stays blue > no non reducing (or reducing) sugar present
- if sample forms green>yellow>orange>brick red ppt > non reducing sugar present
