Sugar Flashcards
What are carbohydrates?
A group of molecules containing carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.
What are glycosidic bonds?
A bond formed between two monosaccharides by a hydrolysis reaction
What are the functions of CHO?
Store of energy
Source of energy
Structural units
What are the three main groups of carbohydrates?
Monosaccharides
Disaccharides
Polysaccharides
Why are monosaccharides particularly important in organisms?
They are a source of energy
Why are monosaccharides a good source of energy?
They are well suited due to a large number of carbon-hydrogen bonds
What are the properties of monosaccharides?
Sugars which taste sweet
Soluble in water
Insoluble in non-polar solvents
Describe the structure of monosaccharides
A backbone of single bonded carbon atoms.
One double bonded oxygen atom to from a carboxyl group.
What are isomers?
Molecules whose form is the same but the atoms are rearranged differently in space
What are the three most common disaccharides?
Maltose
Sucrose
Lactose
What two monosaccharides make up maltose?
Alpha glucose + alpha glucose
What two monosaccharides make up sucrose?
Alpha glucose + fructose
What two monosaccharides make up lactose?
ß galactose + alpha glucose
What two monosaccharides make up Cellobiose?
ß glucose + ß glucose
What is the molecular formula of glucose?
C6 H12 O6
