what are SUDS?
sustainable urban drainage systems
positives of rain gardens

-attractive
-can be planted as landscaping features
-reduces runoff rate and volume
-flexible layout
-easy to maintain
maintain
-can be installed in impervious areas (if designed correctly)
what are rain gardens?
rain gardens are small depressions in the ground planted with native, inunndation-resistant vegetation. they act as infiltration points for roof water and other ‘clean’ surface water
negatives of rain gardens
- small, so limited impact
- require landscaping and management
- susceptible to clogging if the surrounding landscape is not managed
- not suitable for areas with steep slopes
what are wetlands
wetlands are shallow ponds and marshy areas covered in aquatic plants. they detain flows for an extended period of time to allow sediments to settle and remove contaminants by adhesion to vegetation and aerobic decomposition.
