Succsession Flashcards
1
Q
What is succession ?
A
The change in an ecological community over time
2
Q
What primary succession?
A
- Pioneer species colonising bare rock/sand
- Pioneer species adapted to survive in harsh abiotic factors
- Through their death-decomposition change abiotic factors-becomes less harsh-forms thin layer of soil & humus
- Mosses and smaller plants now survive-increase the depth of nutrients in soil
- Environment becomes less sustainable for previous species
- Climax community-trees dominated
3
Q
What secondary succession?
A
- Succession is disrupted & plants destroyed
- Succession starts again
- Soil is already created-does not need to start from bare rock serval stage
