Succession Flashcards
What is succession?
Change to an ecosystem and the species which occupy it over a time period.
What changes cause succession?
-Abiotic factors such as PH, soil and water.
What is stage 2 of succession?
-Pioneer species make up a pioneer community in a hostile environment.
-When they die they decompose to release nutrients to soil/rock.
-Moss and ferns can now grow as thicker soil can hold water.
What is stage 1 of succession?
Colonisation of pioneer species and can tolerate extreme conditions.
What is stage 3 of succession?
-New flowering plants grow and when die release more nutrients to soil/rock.
-Now tress and shrubs can be grown.
-New habitats for species.
What is a climax community?
Having a high level of biodiversity and abiotic factors are stable and stable population.
