Populations Flashcards
What is a niche?
Every species has a niche in a habitat.
-Influenced by biotic and abiotic factors.
-Each species has 1 reducing intraspecific competition.
What is phase one in the population growth curve and what does it mean?
-Slow growth/lag phase
-birth rate is higher than death rate.
What is phase two in the population growth curve and what does it mean
-Exponential growth
-No limitation to growth.
What is carrying capacity?
The maximum population size an environment can support .
What is phase three in the population growth curve and what does it mean
-Stable phase.
-No population growth or reduction
-Limiting factors present
What is the death phase?
The death rate is higher than than the birth rate.
What is migration?
Seasonal movement of animals from one region to another.
What is density independent factors?
A factor that can change population growth regardless of the size (e.g earthquakes)
How does human population growth avoid the death phase?
-Using technology and medicine.
