Succession Flashcards
Succession
a process of change in community composition and structure, usually towards the establishment of a stable ecosystem
Nudation
development of bare sites with no organisms inhabiting the affected area.
First stage of Primary Succession
Pioneer plants colonies arrive. They secrete organic acids which attack the rocky surface in the process of weather, allowing windblown dust particles to settle in cracks.
Second stage of Primary Succession
As pioneer plants die and decompose, a thin layer of soil forms. Shallow soil, leading to moss growth. When they die, nutrient is attended to soil. Over time bacteria, fungi and invertebrates establish and form simple community
third stage of Primary Succession
Early colonising plants are r-selected species. Typically have effective seed dispersal, rapid growth and rapid reproduction. Numbers usually die out when more competitive species move in
4th stage of Primary Succession
New community forms: establishment of autotrophs, small herbivores, immigrant species from surrounding areas.
