Energy and Matter In An Ecosystem Flashcards
Law of conservation of energy
energy can’t be created or destroyed only transformed or transferred
Chemotrophic Organisms
use simple inorganic chemical compounds containing sulfur and iron as their source of energy and matter.
Autotrophs
synthesise organic compounds from inorganic raw materials. (can create their own food)
Heterotrophs
Can not synthesise their own food so they take energy form other organisms by consuming them
equation for Photosynthesis
carbon dioxide + water + sunlight —> glucose + oxygen
Biomass
the total mass of biological matter (living or dead) in a given area
gross primary productivity (GPP)
total amount of energy that flows through the producers (kJ m-2 year -1)
Net primary productivity
the amount of energy available to consumers
Equation to form ATP
Glucose + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water + ATP
