Substances In Nature Which Can Be Used To Obtain Energy Flashcards
What is coal?
Coal is an important natural fuel we use regularly. At Sasol 1,2,3 other fuels such as petrol oil and diesel are made from coal.
What is oil?
Oil from which petrol diesel and paraffin are made is use in cars, trains and homes.
What are natural gases?
Found below the surface of the earth and are used as fuel in homes factories and buildings.
What is wood?
Is used as fuel to heat water and other substances.
Fossil fuels are ____,____ and _____ gasses.
Oil
Coal
Natural
Explain how crude the history of crude oil?
Millions of years ago the vegetation and animal bodies rotted and sank into swamps. Hundreds of thousands of years passed and silt covered the swamps turning into rock. The vegetation was now trapped between layers of rock below the surface. The forces underground changed the vegetation into reservoirs of thick black liquid that we call “crude oil”. Natural gas is usually found with crude oil deposits. Other deposits of this vegetation were changed into hard, black coal.
What are fossil fuels?
They are stored chemical energy. When we burn them we are releasing their stored energy. Fossil fuels take millions of years to form and once used up there will be nothing to replace them, we call them non-renewable sources of energy.
What are non-renewable sources of energy?
Energy that can not be used again.
What is nuclear energy?
It now being used to supply the world’s need for energy. It brings the danger of radioactive pollution and radiation with it. Nuclear energy has many uses.
What are the uses of nuclear energy?
- Prolong the shelf life of fresh foodstuffs.
- Used in medical science for diagnostic purposes.
- Produces more energy per weight than conventional fuel so it is the only power source used in space research.
