Stored Energy Flashcards
Stored energy is also known as _____ energy because it is not making anything happen but it could.
Potential
How types of stored energy are there?
4
What is chemical energy?
Energy can be stored in chemicals as chemical energy. When fuels such as wood and petrol are burned the stored energy is released as heat and light. Food also contains stored energy which can be used in our bodies.
What is nuclear nuclear energy?
Energy can also be stored inside atoms as nuclear energy. It can be released from some atoms e.g. Uranium atoms in nuclear power stations. Nuclear energy in hydrogen atoms is the source of the sun’s energy.
What is elastic potential energy?
Stored in matter which stressed, compressed or bent. A stretched rubber band, a compressed spring or a bent stick can store elastic potential energy until the force holding it is removed.
What is gravitational potential energy?
Stored when a body is lifted above the surface of the earth. A heavy box on a shelf can do a lot of damage if it falls on the floor. This is because potential energy changes into kinetic energy when it falls. The heavier the box and higher it is, the more potential energy it has.
