What are the criteria for substance use disorder? (ABUSE - CUFS)
Craving, or strong desire or urge to use. Use in physically hazardous situations. Failure to fulfil major role obligations at work, school, home. Social/interpersonal problems.
What are the criteria for substance use disorder? (DEPENDENCE - GET COWS)
Give up or reduction in important parts of life. Exceeding intended amounts or using longer than intended. Tolerance. Cannot cut down. Ongoing use despite knowledge of having a persistent health issue that is likely to be have been caused or made worse by the use. Withdrawal. Substantial amount of time spent in activities necessary to obtain the substance, use it, or recover from its effects.
How many symptoms are needed to diagnoses substance use disorder?

How many symptoms are needed to give the specifier, mild?
2-3 symptoms.
How many symptoms are needed to give the specifier, moderate?
4-5 symptoms.
How many symptoms are needed to give the specifier, severe?
6+ symptoms.
How long do the symptoms need to be present to diagnose substance use disorder?
Symptoms must occur within a 12 month period.
How is tolerance defined? (2)
- A need for markedly increased amounts of a substance to achieve intoxication or desired effect. 2. A markedly diminished effect with continued use of the same amount of a substance.
How is withdrawal defined? (2)
- The characteristic withdrawal syndrome. 2. The substance or a closely related substance is used to relieve or avoid withdrawal symptoms.
