What are the symptoms of schizophrenia? (5)
- Delusions. 2. Hallucinations. 3. Disorganized speech (frequent derailment or incoherence). 4. Grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior. 5. Negative symptoms (diminished emotional expression or avoilition)
How many symptoms of schizophrenia are needed for a diagnosis? For what amount of time?
2 or more for a significant portion of time during a 1-month period.
For a diagnosis of schizophrenia, how long must continuous signs of the disturbance persist for?
For 6 months.
What distinguishes schizophrenia from depression or bipolar with psychotic features?
Schizophrenia does not present with a depressive or manic episode. The psychosis is exclusively only present during the depressive/manic episode.
What distinguishes schizophrenia from schizoaffective disorder?
No depressive episode is present, or if it is present during the active phase, it is present for a minority of the time.
What symptoms does a client need at least one of to be diagnosed with schizophrenia?
Symptoms 1-3. Delusions, hallucinations, and/or disorganized speech.
What distinguishes schizophrenia from schizophreniform disorder? (2)
- Schizophreniform disorder is diagnosed when the symptoms are met for schizophrenia, except the symptoms have been present for between 1-6 months. 2. Daily functioning may or may not have declined over that period of time.
What is criterion B of schizophrenia?
For a significant portion of time since the onset of the disturbance, level of functioning in one or more major areas, such as work, interpersonal activities, or self-care, is markedly below the level achieved prior to onset.
What are the symptoms of brief psychotic disorder? how many are need for a diagnosis?
Positive symptoms: 1. Delusions. 2. Hallucinations. 3. Disorganized speech. 4. Grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior. One, or more, are needed.
What distinguishes brief psychotic disorder from schizophrenia? (2)
- No negative symptoms are present in brief psychotic episode. 2. Brief psychotic episode onsets quickly and lasts between a day and a month.
What are two examples of disorganized speech?
- Word salad. 2. Neologisms (creating new words).
What are the criteria for delusional disorder? (deluSIONAL)
Schizophrenia A criteria not met. Impairment of functioning is absent. Odd or bizarre behavior absent. Not due to a substance. Absence of mood episodes, or they are brief. Lasts 1 month or more.
What are the criteria for schizoaffective disorder? (SAD)
Symptoms that meet criteria for a major mood episode are present for the majority of the total duration of the active and residual portion of the illness. An uninterrupted period of illness during which there is a mood episode concurrent with Criterion A of schizophrenia. Delusions or hallucinations for 2 or more weeks in the absence of a major mood episode during the lifetime duration of the illness.
