Substance use disorders Flashcards
What does addiction mean
drug use to the point where the body normal state is the drugged state ( person requires the drug to feel normal). your bodily state when you use a drug becomes your normal state.
Why is the term addiction not used much in the clinical and research field anymore
addiction is a term that is rarely used nowadays because it implies that drug dependency is primarily a physical one whereas in reality it is a complex mix of physical and psychological dependency. It is also a very stigmatising term.
in clinical practice what term do we now speak of instead of addiction
substance use disorder
What are the 4 important characteristics that define substance use disorders
unsuccessful control, preoccupation with drug, unintentional overuse and neglecting life activities.
What does the characteristic unsuccessful control mean
people generally try to exert control and its unsuccessful so they try to cut it down or stop and it doesn’t work.
