What did shell shock refer to?
She’ll shock was referring to how we maybe think of ptsd which was about 100 years ago
What did people think shell shock was caused by?
It was thought that this syndrome was caused by the shelling of the artillery, so it was thought, that was actually causing minor injuries to the brain.
What was newly discovered?
It became increasingly discovered that these symptoms actually were observed in servicemen who were not exposed to shelling, many people were affected.
What was the idea back then about removing the stress?
Back then the idea was if you remove the stressor, so if you remove someone from the war zone they should get better quickly and then they were just sent back into service.
Was there any treatment available for this?
There was no cure for it. There was no psychological treatment
What was the ideas 50 years ago?
It was mainly thought that these symptoms were sort of war related.
What was realised in the in the 1980s?
That these trauma related syndromes also occur in other people who experienced childhood trauma or rape or other traumatic events.
When was PTSD in the diagnostic manuals?
What we now understand as ptsd is quite a young diagnosis. It really only made its entrance into the diagnostic manuals in the 1980s. And that was the related to big wars. Driven by the Vietnam war in the us.
In the beginning what was PTSD called?
Also called a Vietnam war related stress syndrome
