Lecture 2 Classification Flashcards
Why do we need diagnosis, why is it useful
We need the same language we need to know what we are talking about
How have classification systems developed over the years
Classification systems are evidence based so classification systems have developed over the years so when new research comes the classification systems develop and change.
Why are classification systems and diagnosis helpful
They are helpful for clients as it can help clients understand what they have uses the same language so if i talk to you about anxiety
What type of diagnosis do we have for psychiatry and clinical psychology
Functional diagnoses
What are functional diagnoses
For functional diagnoses such as depression we do not have the one cause we do not have the one underlying explanations for it. They are a collection of expericnes, subjective symptoms, behaviours we can see.
What are organic diagnoses
They are diagnoses which all have one underlying organic abnormality/ cause.
Give an example of an organic diagnoses
For dementia we now have specific genes like Alzheimer’s. If you have the specific gene you are more likely to develop it
Why is there a margin of error in clinical psychology
For clinical psychology we use functional diagnoses which could explain why there is a sort of margin of error that threshold becasue we do the best we can trying to describe what something is , when there isn’t one underlying cause.
What have we realised in clinical psychology to do with diagnoses
Ideally we are trying to find the one underlying cause but we are now realising that there isn’t one gene or that one abnormality or one transmitter - they all work together. So the best idea is trying to get individualised precision type medicine.
Give examples of functional diagnoses
Schizophrenia
Bipolar disorders
Depression
Anxiety disorder
Eating disorders
Ptsd
Personality disorders
Give examples of organic diagnoses
Intellectual impairment
The dementia’s
Huntington’s disease
Syphillis
Brain injury
UTI/ chest infections in older adults
Korsakoff’s syndrome
For psychiatric diagnoses what are the symptoms
They are largely subjective. For example with a headache , you can have a headache because of tense shoulders or covid. This is same for a lot of symptoms we observe so we can see hallucination in szhciphrenia but also in bipolar. This can also be seen in people in bereavement but we would never say that person has szhicphrenia they have a vivid memory so it seems that person is still there.
What are the signs/ symptoms of medical diagnoses
In classic medicine they are objectively identifiable , they are only associated with a few conditions . For example if we think about diabetes we can measure sugar in urine and we want to be able to do that with a mental health diagnosis.
