What are functional diagnoses

A

For functional diagnoses such as depression we do not have the one cause we do not have the one underlying explanations for it. They are a collection of expericnes, subjective symptoms, behaviours we can see.

Q

Why is there a margin of error in clinical psychology

A

For clinical psychology we use functional diagnoses which could explain why there is a sort of margin of error that threshold becasue we do the best we can trying to describe what something is , when there isn’t one underlying cause.

Q

What have we realised in clinical psychology to do with diagnoses

A

Ideally we are trying to find the one underlying cause but we are now realising that there isn’t one gene or that one abnormality or one transmitter - they all work together. So the best idea is trying to get individualised precision type medicine.

Q

For psychiatric diagnoses what are the symptoms

A

They are largely subjective. For example with a headache , you can have a headache because of tense shoulders or covid. This is same for a lot of symptoms we observe so we can see hallucination in szhciphrenia but also in bipolar. This can also be seen in people in bereavement but we would never say that person has szhicphrenia they have a vivid memory so it seems that person is still there.

Q

What are the signs/ symptoms of medical diagnoses

A

In classic medicine they are objectively identifiable , they are only associated with a few conditions . For example if we think about diabetes we can measure sugar in urine and we want to be able to do that with a mental health diagnosis.
