What is Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome?
Neurological symptoms caused by thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency from alcoholism.
What is Wernicke’s encephalopathy?
A medical emergency of acute confusion, abnormal eye movements, and unsteady gait.
Can lead to chronic dementia or death.
What is Korsakoff’s psychosis?
A chronic condition characterized by inability to learn new information and short-term and long-term memory problems.
What are medical complications of cocaine?
Heart attacks, extreme weight loss, and stroke.
What are complications of methamphetamine?
Hypothermia, seizures, brain damage, kidney damage, and stroke.
What is cross-tolerance?
Building up a tolerance for one drug while building one for another.
What are blackouts?
Amnesia for the events of any parts of a drinking episode without loss of consciousness.
What are withdrawal symptoms of alcohol?
Nausea/vomiting, seizures, tremors, night sweats, elevated vital signs, and delirium.
What are the early stage symptoms of alcohol withdrawal?
Elevated vital signs, sweating, gastrointestinal symptoms, headache, hand tremors, and jerkiness.
What are the moderate stage symptoms of alcohol withdrawal?
High temperature, hallucinations, vomiting, clammy skin, combativeness, and anxiety.
What are the severe stage symptoms of alcohol withdrawal?
Worsening symptoms and confusion, which can lead to death and delirium.
What is the CIWA?
Used to assess alcohol withdrawal symptoms, with a score range of 0-7.
What is CAGE?
A tool used to assess for drug or alcohol usage: Cut down, Annoyed, Guilt, Eye opener.
