Submarines Flashcards

Q
How do submarines float and sink?
A
Submarines have ballast tanks to float and sink. To sink, the ballast tanks are opened so they can be filled with water to make them denser than water so they can sink. To float, compressed air is pushed into the ballast tanks which forces out all of the water, and then it is filled with air giving the submarine a lower density so it can resurface and float on the surface of the water.

Q
How deep can a submarine dive
A
Submarine depth is limited by water pressure. The deeper a submarine the greater the water pressure acts on it.
