Subject - Verb Agreement Flashcards
The subject can be a noun, a pronoun, or even a noun phrase. If it is a pronoun, the subject-verb agreement is done with reference to the person of the pronoun.
Singular subjects take singular verbs.
Some phrases in between can cause confusion
Example given:
1. The chefs prepare the meals daily for all the guests.
2. The servers clean the tables and ensure customer satisfaction.
Plural subjects take plural verbs
Are words that refer to a group of individuals, animals, or things as a single entity. Even though they represent multiple members, they are usually treated as singular when it comes to subject-verb agreement in a sentence.
Collective nouns
The subject and verb must still agree
When a subject is separated from its verb by other words (prepositions, clauses)
A combination of two or more subjects that has the same predicate
Compound subjects
Look for the closest subject
