Mud cloth
Cotton cloth painted with fermented mud. Only can happen in certain areas with a specific chemical composition. A technique particular to Africa.

Printed fabric using wax resist
Commemorative “fancy” prints
Worn on special occasions and used to express political affiliations. Have portraits on them of heads of state. If portrait is worn upside down, it’s a statement of disapproval
Strip weaving
Made on small looms that are later stitched together
Kente cloth
In it’s pure form it’s a strip woven fabric where the colors and designs express group identification and tribal identity. I’m modern day society it can be a printed fabric.
Gele
Turban. A distinctly African form of the turban that takes on architectural shapes. Can be wrapped in different shapes and with different cloth
Hijab
Large Muslim population, especially closer to the Middle East, and see the hijab commonly draped instead of wrapped
Pagne
Rectangle of fabric used in different ways. Dominant word in francophone countries. Used to describe tribal clothing like the sari and the sarung. Can also be called a wrapper, lappa, and cloth.
Boubou (bubu)
Unisex garment. Big poncho or very full T-shaped garment like a kaftan.
Missionary dress
Like “mother Hubbard” dress. Describes western-influenced 19th century style dress. Jumper style bodice and flounced skirts paired with peasant blouses.
Bush coat
Male version of the female missionary dress. Jacket derived from European styles.
Dashiki
Loose shirt, typically T-shaped with short to long sleeves. Male garment that’s usually fabricated with traditional fabric.
“Up and down”
Male garment. It’s a slang term to describe matched top and pants.
Urban street dress in Ghana
Very active street dress culture. Derived from American pop culture. It’s a collage of different elements. Sunglasses are hugely popular. Sense of color can be shocking in some places. Joy and irony in fashion.
