Sombrero
Hat that was derived from Emiliano Zapata. Has wide brim and has become the distinctive hat shape associated with Mexico. Comes in felt and straw form and is a distinct expression of Mexican culture.
Emiliano Zapata
Galvanizing figure of the Mexican Civil War. He does before it’s over and dressed similar to a gaucho. People were inspired by his dress and so dressed like him and were called “zapatistas”. What these zapatistas wore is what we associate with traditional Mexican dress.
Sarape (aka serape)
Rectangular shawl usually worn by men. Typically worn over one shoulder and folded in half. Worn in Mexico. Patterns woven on the warp. Virtually always involves stripes with a diamond motif and it ends with the weft ends ending in fringe (self-fringe)
Rebozo
Big shawl with fringe that are applied tassels. Commonly a solid color. Female garment.
Frida kahlo
Wife of Diego Rivera. Brings Mexican style to North America and Europe. Has mild impact in fashion and her jewelry got copied.
Dia des Muertos
The first of November. Means “the day of the dead”. It’s a celebration the day after Halloween. Skeleton motif. Decorate graves of relatives with figurines. Has big inspiration on tattoo art. Wear special outfits.
