in northen ireland elections to northen irish assembley
1.
northen ireland is divided up into 18 regions which will each select five MLAs. this means that multiple candidates from each party appear on the ballot paper
2.
the voter ranks the candidates in order of preference ranking as many or as few as they wish . this is known as ordinal voting.
3.
the droop quota is calculated
(total number of valid votes cast in a region / number of seats available in a region ) +1
4.
candidates who reach the candidate are awarded a seat . any votes above the quote are redistributed according to the next preference and if a candidate now reaches above the quota they also get a seat
5.
if any seats remain but no one has reached the quote the bottom candidate is eliminated and their votes are redistributed according to the next preference . continues to all seats r filled.
