Stuff I Don't Know (P2) Flashcards
What aromatic compounds will NaOH (metal hydroxide) react with?
- Phenol (OH)
- Carboxylic acid (OH)
What functional group with Na2CO3 (metal carbonate) react with?
Only OH of carboxylic acid
Not alcohol
What does an ester link look like?
What does an amide link look like?
How do you name an ester?
- Thyl from alcohol
- Oate from acid/anhydride
When you draw it thyl is on the right
What is an optical isomer?
Non-super imposable mirror images
How do you test for a carboxylic acid + what will you observe?
- Use sodium carbonate
- Fizzing / bubbling if present
How do you test for an alcohol + what would you observe?
- Add acidifed potassium dichromate
- If present orange - green
Does bromine react more readily with benzene of phenol - why?
Phenol:
* Lone pair is delocalised into ring
* Increases electron density
* Br2 (electrophile) is more polarised
Are esters biodegradable and if so why?
Yes - ester bond can be hydrolysed
What is a Zwitterion
Neutral molecule with postive + negative charge
Eg. amino acid
How do you know if a reaction is nucleophillic or electrophillic?
- Nucleophillic - if arrow goes from small compound to big compound
- Electrophillic - if arrow goes from big compound to small compound
This is nucleophillic
