Studying Life Flashcards
What is biology?
It is the science that seeks to understand the living world.
What are the eight characteristics of living things?
Living things are made up of units called cells, reproduce, are based on a universal genetic code, grow and develop, obtain and use materials and energy, respond to their environment, maintain a stable internal environment and change over time.
What is a cell?
It is a collection of living matter enclosed by a barrier that separates the cell from its surroundings.
What happens during sexual reproduction?
During sexual reproduction, cells from two different parents unite to produce the first cell of the new organism.
How many parents will a new organism have after asexual reproduction?
It will have one parent.
What is metabolism?
It is a combination of chemical reactions through which a organism builds up or breaks down materials as it carries out its life processes.
What is a stimulus?
It is a signal to which a organism responds.
What is homeostasis?
The process by which a organism keeps their internal conditions relatively stable.
