STUDY UNIT 10: Counselling ethics and values Flashcards
what are ethics
Ethics can be defined as the science and study of moral norms and laws. This
includes the ability to differentiate between what is good and what is bad and to
do the good or right thing
what 3 aspects are involved in counseling
three aspects involved in ethics, namely the self, other people,
and the good. The self can be you, the individual or a group. The same applies
to the other: it can be another person or group or all the stakeholders of an
organisation. The good is more difficult to define. This, of course, begs the
question: What is good? It can be that what you value, believe in and those
norms or codes of conduct that you follow constitute the good.
what is the normative approach to ethics
In the normative approach, the person directs his or her behaviour according to
a certain set of norms and values. The person with a normative approach will
treat all people with respect, irrespective of whether s/he benefits from it. It is
part of his or her value system.
what is The relational ethics approach
The relational ethics approach suggests that relational ethics makes more
sense. While rule-based or normative ethics is universal and absolute, making
decision-making more clear, relational ethics is not. Relational ethics has to do
with considering the effects of particular actions in particular contexts
explain what a personal mission statement is
A personal mission statement
explains what you are about and what is important to you. This way, you can
have a mission statement for yourself, your marriage, your family, your work.
It is a yardstick, a norm by which we can measure how far we are off the mark
or how close we are to living our lives the way we would like to
