Q

Define :

  • Tissue
  • Organ
  • Transpiration
  • Diffusion
  • Translocation
  • Adhesion Forces
  • Cohesion Forces
A
  • A group of cells that are similar
  • A group of tissues that are similar in order to create a specific function (eg. heart)
  • The controlled release of water vapor through stomata on the underside of the leaf
  • The movement of a liquid, gas or vapor from a high concentration gradient to a low concentration gradient
  • The transportation of water, nutrients and food around the plant using xylem and phloem
  • The for attracting to dissimilar substances (eg. Water and xylem)
  • The attraction of the same substance to itself (eg. Water)

Q

Leaf as an Organ: (function, location and Structure)

  • Xylem and phloem
  • Epidermis
  • Mesophyll (palisade and spongy)
  • Cuticle
  • Stoma
  • Guard cells
A
  • help in transportation of water, nutrients and dissolved food. Found in vascular bundle (center of stem, vein, root). Tube like, xylem thicker, xylem lignified (dead and woody)
  • allow for light to pass through relatively easily, support the leaf diffusion of gases. Under Cuticle (upper), bottom of leaf (lower). 1 cell thick, tightly horizontally packed, same size and often brick shaped.
  • (palisade) allow for photosynthesis. Under upper epidermis, Vertically packed, contain chloroplasts. (Spongy) allow for gaseous diffusion. Above lower epidermis. Very open and patchy allowing for gasses to pass.
  • Helps in water retention and vapor retention. Above upper epidermis. Waxy and water repellent.
  • Help in gaseous diffusion. Found in lower epidermis. Wholes.
  • Control the stoma. Found around stoma. Thick inner walls, thin outer walls, large vacuoles.

Q

Root as an organ: (structure, location, function)

  • Xylem, phloem
  • root hair
A
  • The same, only surrounded by cortex(cells storing energy in the form of starch)
  • Adapted epithelial cells (hair like). Found attached to root and in the soil. Diffusion of water and nutrients by having a high salt concentration in the root hairs and actively transporting nutrients/ salts.

Q

Animal tissue: (structure, location, function)

  • Blood
  • Bone
  • Nervous
A
  • 4 parts:
    >Red - contains hemoglobin, found in blood (plasma), to transport oxygen
    >White - has a nucleus, larger than red, found in plasma, kills ‘foreign invaders’ and its own problematic cells
    >Plasma - Water based liquid that contains, red, white and platelets. Transports.
    > Platelets - made of broken down old cells, found in plasma, main purpose is to clot.

Q
  • Cartilage

- Epithelium

A
  • Chondrocytes sit in lacunae surrounded by jelly like substance called chondrin, found all over the. shock absorbing. Fibrous - increases size of joints, protects tendons. Elastic - contains more collagen
