study of the brain (pg.98-108) Flashcards
medulla
base of the brainstem, controls automatic functions such as breathing.
pons
it connects the brain with the spinal cord and also has a nerve system that controls unconscious processes such as sleep (when, more or less?)
reticular formation
nerve network that travels through the brainstem into the thalamus and plays a role in arousal/control. (ex: obese people can have a problem with their reticular form. because they cannot control themselves when eating.)
thalamus
brain’s sensory control center, on top of brainstem: like a switchboard that sends signals to the CNS from brain, from CNS to brain.
EEG
measures electrical brain waves, high waves are associated with happiness/low waves-depression, flat line-braindead
MEG
measures magnetic brain waves, ex. PTSD causes magnetic waves to be very low
petting pets can improve magnetic waves
CT/CAT Scan
takes photographic x-rays of the brain, a look inside the brain without surgery
PET scan
involves radioactive glucose dye which lights up the brain, colder colors are associated with depression while warmer colors are associated with happiness.
MRI scan
both photographic and magnetic scan of the brain. deep, deep scan of the brain anatomy, can give details about why a person has a certain condition ex: schizophrenia
fMRI
measures bloodflow in areas of the brain, shows brain function as well as structure.
brainstem
oldest part of our brain, includes medulla pons reticular formation and thalamus
