cerebral cortex pg 109-119 Flashcards
where are the frontal lobes and what do they do?
Behind your forehead. Involved with speaking, judgment, muscle movements and making plans.
what is the cerebral cortex and what does it do?
the intricate fabric of interconnected neural cells covering the cerebral hemispheres. the body’s ultimate control and information processing center.
where are the parietal lobes and what do they do?
top of the head. It receives sensory input for touch and body position.
where are the occipital lobes and what do they do?
lies at the back of the head and receives and processes our vision.
where are the temporal lobes and what do they do?
side of the head behind the ears. includes the auditory areas, each receiving information from the opposite ear.
what does the motor cortex do?
controls our voluntary movements
where is the cerebellum or “little brain” and what does it do?
at the rear of the brainstem. Functions include processing sensory input, coordinating movement output and balance, and enabling nonverbal learning and memory & coordinating voluntary movements. Ex: when a soccer player controls the ball.
what makes up the limbic system and what does it do?
sometimes referred to as the midbrain. made up of the amygdala, hypothalamus, hippocampus, and pituitary gland. Is a neural system associated with our emotions and drives/desires.
what does the amygdala do?
neural clusters linked to our emotions. ex: linked to aggression and fear.
what does the hypothalamus do?
directs several maintenance activities. ex: helps with eating, drinking and body temp. also helps govern the endocrine system via the pituitary gland, which is linked to our sexual emotions and rewards from pleasure.
what does the hippocampus do?
it helps us process for storage explicit, or conscious information memories of facts and events. ex: taking notes in class
what does the pituitary gland do?
releases several important hormones and controls the function of many other endocrine system glands. ex: controls sex hormones and allows for procreation.
