Anatomical Position
Anterior forward with wrists and palms of hands facing forward
Superior/Inferior
Top and bottom (cranial and caudal)
Anterior/Posterior
Front and back (ventral and dorsal)
Proximal/Distal
Proximal = closer to point of attachment to a limb (example: the forearm is proximal to the shoulder)
Distal = farther away from point of attachment
(example: the fingers are distal to the shoulder)
Lateral/medial
Lateral = away from the midline and the sides of the body Medial = closer to the midline Intermediate = in between the two
Sagittal/Midsagittal/Parasagittal
Sagittal = right and left of the body and runs from top to bottom Midsagittal = right and left split from the midline Parasagittal = a line that splits right and left but isn't on the midline
Frontal/coronal
Splits anterior and posterior (front and back) (ventral and dorsal)
Transverse/horizontal
Splits top and bottom (superior and inferior or cranial and caudal)
Dorsal cavity
Runs along the back
Major Organ = spine
Cranial/spinal
Brain and spinal cord/brain stem

Includes the thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic cavities
