Study Goals Final Exam Week 14 Flashcards
Ecology
The study of how organisms interact with each other and their environment
Biogeography
The study of how organisms are distributed geographically and through geologic time
What is an organism’s range?
The range of conditions that a species can tolerate and the range of resources it can use
What is an organism’s niche?
A product of many abiotic & biotic factors, both present & past
What factors enhance or limit an organism’s range and niche?
-Temperature & Climate
-Resource Availability
-Reproductive Strategies
-Adaptations to Local Conditions
-Dispersal Mechanisms
-Symbiotic Relationships
-Predation/Disease
-Physical/Climate Barriers
Competition
What is the difference between climate and weather?
-Climate is the long-term weather conditions found in an area occurs relatively predictable global patterns
-Weather is the specific short-term atmospheric conditions of temperature, precipitation, sunlight, & wind
Why are the tropics warm and the poles cold?
The tropics are warm due to receiving more sunlight and cold due to receiving less sunlight
What causes seasonality in weather?
The Earth’s distance from the Sun varies as it moves around the Sun
What is an adaptive radiation?
When a single lineage rapidly produces many descendant species with a wide range of adaptive forms
What is the difference between a background extinction and mass extinction?
-Mass Extinction is the rapid extinction of a large number of diverse species around the world(at least 60%)
-Background Extinction is the lower, average rate of extinction observed when a mass extinction is not occurring
