Student's t-Test Flashcards
What is the student’s t-Test?
it is used to compare two sets of data to see if they are significantly different
Step 1 - What do you calculate first?
calculate the difference between the means of both data sets (x-bar 1 - x-bar 2)
Step 2 - What do you square?
the standard deviation of each group (S^2)
Step 3 - What do you divide S^2 by?
its sample size
Step 4 - What do you add?
add both group values together (S1 squared / Nv1) + (S2 squared / Nv2)
Step 5 - What do you square root?
the previous answer from step 4
Step 7 - What do you ignore?
ignore the negative values - the answer doesn’t change even if it’s negative
Step 6 - What do you divide?
divide the difference between the means (x-bar 1 - x-bar 2) by the square rooted answer = t value
What is null hypothesis?
there is no significant difference between the means of both samples
What is critical value at p=0.05?
If the t-test statistic is greater than the critical value at P = 0.05, then you reject the null hypothesis → there’s less than 5% probability that the results occurred by chance.
What is degree of freedom (df/DF)?
(Sample size of group 1 + Sample size of group 2 - 2
