One Tailed vs Two Tailed Student's t-test Flashcards
What are the two different ways that we can conduct a student’s t-test?
One Tailed Test and Two Tailed Test
What is One Tailed Test?
testing for the probability of the relationship in one direction
What does the One Tailed Test test for?
if the mean of data set ‘A’ is greater than the data set of ‘B’ OR if it is significantly less
What can’t One Tailed Test tell us?
it can’t tell us both at the same time whether it is greater or lesser than set B
What is the Two Tailed Test?
it tests for the probability of the relationship in both directions
What would the null hypothesis for the Two Tailed Test be?
it would be that the mean of set A is the same as the mean of set B
What does the Two Tailed Test test to see?
if the mean of A is significantly greater or less than the mean of B
What is the mean of the Two Tailed Test considered?
the mean is considered statistically significantly different if the test statistic is in the top 2.5% or the bottom 2.5% of the probability distribution
What is the Paired t-test?
it compares data from the same source e.g. Joe Day 1 and Joe Day 2
What is the Unpaired t-test?
this compares data from two different sources e.g. Joe Day 1 vs Kate Day 1
