Shared beliefs + views of the world
What does he believe about images?
There are no fixed meanings in images
Images are interpreted differently depending on conceptual map
What impact do those in power have?
Meaning is attempted to be fixed by those in power
Stereotyping fixes meaning
What are the race stereotypes of the black community in old movies + in contemporary representations in different ways?
Slave, narrator, entertainer
What is the slave figure?
Dependable, loving, devoted to mother/master
What is the native?
Because of their primitive nature, they are cheating, cunning barbarians
What is the entertainer?
Innate humour of the black man (are we laughing at or with them?)
What does Hall argue that we need to do about stereotypes?
We need to go i side the image or sterotype + use it against itself, opening up to the practise if representation
Exposes politics + power structures within image
However, audience wont challenge this stereotype so itβs accepted + fixing is established
