Millions of africans stolen from homeland + old identities + traditions replaced by oppression
What does diaspora cause feelings of?
Feelings of dislocation because of host cultureβs rejection of indigenous cultural identities
What is double consciousness?
Feeling of having 2 cultural identities, but feeling like you dont belong to either
What does ethnic absolution refer to?
The theory that national identities + ethnicity are definite + fixed + u changeable, so each group can be easily distinguished by their common language + cultural conditions
What does ethnic absolution suggest?
That each ethnic group has specific characteristics that are unchangeable + fixed, fixing stereotypes
Gilroy thinks theory is flawed + each person has own characteristics + various cultural backgrounds
What is marginality?
When a group/individual are on the edge of a mainstream culture - part of society of host culture, but excluded
Marginalisation = People being denied degrees of power
What does marginality mean in contemporary media?
BAME people in predominantly caucasian countries seen as different, exotic, excluded
