Structures of the Lymphatic and Immune Systems Flashcards
Define
Lymph
clear, watery fluid that originates in the tissue space around cells, contains white blood cells that help the body fight disease
Define
Lymphatic Vessels
thin tubes that collect lymph from tissues throughout the body and return it to the bloodstream
Define
Lymphatic Ducts
great lymphatic vessel that empties lymph into one of the subclavian veins
Which lymphatic duct empties into which subclavian vein?
right lymphatic duct to right subclavian vein, thoracic duct into the left subclavian vein
Define
Lymphocytes
white blood cells that are made in bone marrow and defend the body against foreign substances
Define
Macrophages
type of white blood cell that surrounds and kills unwanted microscopic particles
Define
Lymph Nodes
small, bean-shaped organs that filter lymph fluid and trap foreign substances
Where are lymph nodes?
they cluster in areas where lymphatic vessels branch off such as the groin, armpit, and neck
Define
Tonsils
located in the throat and palate, are a key defense against pathogens that are inhaled or ingested and also produce white blood cells
Define
Spleen
organ that filters the blood to help destroy microorganisms and get rid of old or damaged red blood cells, also makes lymphocytes and stores blood cells
Define
Thymus Gland
develops T cells that enter the blood stream after maturing and help defend deadly pathogens
