Microorganisms and Common Disorders of the Lymphatic and Immune Systems Flashcards
Define
Microorganisms
microscopic creatures that help you digest food, prevent infection, and maintain your reproductive health
What is the ratio of microorganisms to cells in the human body?
there’s 10 microorganisms for every cell
Define
Pathogens
microorganisms that cause infectious diseases in humans
What are the four types of pathogens?
bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites
Define
Bacteria
single-celled microorganisms that primarily cause disease in humans
How does bacteria enter the body?
through airways, digestive tract, open cuts, or sex
Define
Virus
submicroscopic infectious agent that replicates only inside the living cells of an organism
What is the best way to prevent viruses?
vaccination
Define
Fungi
eukaryotic organisms that include yeast and mold
Define
Parasite
a microscopic organism that lives on or inside another organism (known as a host) and takes nutrients from it to survive
Define
Antibiotics
drugs that kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria and treat bacterial infections
Define
Antifungals
(antimycotics) large and diverse group of drugs that treat fungal infections
Define
Antivirals
drugs that kill viruses or inhibit their ability to reproduce
Define
Vaccines
medical treatment that helps your body’s immune system recognize and fight disease
How do vaccines work?
a small amount of the virus is injected into the body, this then helps the cells create antibodies the same as those produced during an infection of the specific disease. the immune system remembers the antibodies from the vaccine and can then make them faster
Define
Anaphylaxis
severe allergic reaction that can occur rapidly. the immune system releases chemicals that can lead to dangerously low blood pressure and constriction of the airways
Define
Herpes Zoster
also known as shingles, reactivation of the chickenpox (varicella) virus in adults. it is characterized by painful skin eruptions
Define
Human Immunodeficiency Virus
also known as HIV, virus that attacks the immune system and specifically the T cells
Define
Lyme Disease
bacterial infection transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected tick
Define
MRSA
bacterial infection that is resistant to most commonly used antibiotics
Define
Thrush
an infecction that occurs in the mouth caused by a pathogenic yeast
