structures and functions in living organsisms 2.1 - 2.4 Flashcards
what is a cell wall and what does it do
rigid structure made of cellulose, surround the cell membrane
supports and strengthens the cell
what is the cell membrane and what is its function
forms the outer surface of the cell
controls substances going in and out of the cell
what is a nucleus and what does it do
it’s an organelle that contains genetic material
(DNA & RNA) that controls the cells activity
has its own membrane
what is a cytoplasm and what does it do
it’s a gel like substance where most of the cells chemical reactions occur
what are ribosomes and what do they do
small organelles where proteins are made in the cell
what are chloroplasts and what is their function
they make food for the plant
where photosynthesis occurs - contain green substances called chlorophyll which is used in photosynthesis
what is a vacuole and what does it do
large organelle that contains cell sap
helps to support the cell
what is mitrochondria and what do they do
small organelles where most of the reactions for aerobic respiration take place
respiration transfers energy that the cell needs to work
what are organelles
tiny structures within cells
can be eukaryotic or prokaryotic
what are tissues
a group of similar cells that work together to carry out a particular function
what are organs
a group of different tissues that work together to perform a function
what are systems
organs that work together to form organ systems
each does a different job
similarities between animal and plant cells
both multicellular
both include : nucleus, mitochondria, cytoplasm, cell membrane
differences between animal and plant cells
1) only plant cells have a fixed shape
2) plants have a large vacuole, animals have a small or no vacuole
3) only plants have a cell wall
4) plants store carbohydrates as starch - animal store carbohydrates as glycogen
5) plants contain chloroplasts to photosynthesise - animals dont
