Alimentary canal Flashcards
role of the stomach
- pummels the food with muscular walls
- produces protease enzyme, pepsin
- produces hydro laurie acid to kill bacteria and to give the optimum pH level for pepsin to work. (pH2)
role of mouth
salivary glands produce amylase enzyme in saliva
teeth break down food by chewing and churning
oesophagus
muscular tube, connects mouth and stomach. wave like contractions push the food down called peristalsis
liver
where bile is produced
function of bile
file neutralises the acid mixed conditions. The enzymes in the small intestine work best in these alkaline conditions.
emulsifies fats- ( breaks fat into tiny droplets) bigger surface area affect the enzyme lipase to work on
where is bile stored
gall bladder
what does the pancreas do
produces protease, analyse and lipase enzyme - releases these into the small intestine.
role of large intestine
where excess water is absorbed from the food being digested
what does the small intestine do
produce protease, amylase and lipase enzymes to complete digestion
where nutrients are absorbed out of the alimentary canal into the body
first part- duodenum
second part- ilium
role of rectum
last part of the large intestine
where the fences (mainly made up of indigestible food) are stored before they exit out of the anus.
