A

it works in teams for a special project to solve a complex problem.
when problem is solved, the teams break up.
people are specialists so the outcome is high quality.
workers are motivated because they get to use their special skills BUT might lose job satisfaction when the task is over and they go back to ‘ordinary’ job

  • salary costs for managers are reduced because a layer of management is removed
  • communication is less likely to be distorted because the chain if command is shorter
  • decisions making is quicker because there are less levels of management to be consulted

  • there are few chance of promotion to staff because there are less levels in the hierarchy.
  • deadlines may be missed because a managers span of control becomes wider so staff are less closely supervised

effects of increasing a managers span of control:

A
  • managers cannot supervise staff as closely which means the staff are more likely to produce sub-standard work.
  • requires workers to be empowered which means they feel more motivated by extra responsibility.
  • employees cannot speak to managers as easily as he has less time for them meaning decisions made by empolyees are poor
