The primary role of the DMS is to promote, protect and restore the health of service personnel to ensure that they are ready and medically fit to go where they are required in the UK and throughout the world, generally referred to as being ‘fit for task’.

Outline the aim of the defence health strategy
To Promote, Protect and Restore the health of the Defence population in order to maximise their fitness for role, while contributing to the moral component of warfare through excellence in medical support to deployed operations.
Outline the strategic intent for health & wellbeing within the armed forces
- Promote understanding of threats to the health of the Armed Forces community
- Promote a culture for the Armed Forces to develops physical and psychological resilience
- Support health promotion to prevent and mitigate the effects of ill-health and to avoid long-term ill-health
- Integrate all resources - internal and external to the DMS to protect health
- Provide specialist medical advice on health & healthcare
- Develop medical capability that meets the needs of Defence in all likely environments, including complex emergencies
