Structure Of The Eye Flashcards
What are the layers for the structures of the eye?
1.fibrous layer-outer layer
2.vascular layer-middle layer
3.sensory layer-inner layer
What are humors?
-fluids that fill the interior of the eyeball
What is the sclara and what layer is it found in?
-anteriorly seen as the “white part of the eye”
-made up of whitish connective tissue
-found in fibrous layer
What is the cornea and what layer is it found in?
-transparent;central anterior portion
-allows fro light to pass through
-repairs easily
-only human issue that can be transplanted w/o fear of rejection
-found in fibrous layer
What is the vascular layer?
-choroid is a blood rich-nutriative layer in the posterior of the eye
-pigment prevents light from scattering
-split into 2 parts anteriorly
What are the 2 anterior parts of the vascular layer and describe them
-Ciliary body-smooth muscles that attach to the lens by ciliary zonule (suspensory ligament)
-Iris-relguates amount of light being let in
-with iris, pigment gives eye color and the pupil is the rounded opening to the iris
What is the sensory layer made up of?
-retina contains 2 layers
-outer pigmented layer and the inner neural layer
What is the outer pigmented layer and where is it found?
-the outer pigmented layer is found in the sensory layer and absorbs light and prevents scattering
What is the inner neural layer and where is it found?
-the inner neural layer is found in the sensory layer which contains photoreceptors like rods and cones
-neurons of the retina and vision
Describe rods
-found near the edges of the retina
-allow vision to dim light and peripheral vision
-allow perception in grey tones
Describe cones
-allows for color vision
-found in center of retina
-fovea centralis-found lateral to blind sport
-fovea is the area of the retina with only cones and has the sharpest vision
Where can you not find photoreceptors?
At the optic disc or at blind spot
What is color blindness?
-a genetic disorder where an individual lacks cones and are unable to see different colors
Describe the lens
-crystal+biconvex structure
-held together by suspensory ligament and ciliary body
What are cataracts?
-when lens becomes hard and opaque
-results in blurry vision or blindness
What are risk factors for cataracts?
-diabetes
-smoking
-frequent exposure to light
