Accesory Structures Of The Eye Flashcards
What are the accessory structures of the eye?
-eyelid/eyelashes
-conjunctiva
-lacrimal apparatus
-eccentric eye muscles
Where does the eyelid meet?
In the medial and lateral commussure (carthus)
Describe the function of the eyelashes?
-tarsal glands create oily secretions that lubricate the eye
-ciliary glands are located between eyelashes; modified sweat glands
Describe the conjunctiva
-forms the outer surface of the eye
-membrane that lines eyelids
-secretes mucus to lubricate the eye
What is conjuntivitis?
-inflammation to the conjunctiva causing red eyes, sometimes causes musics secretions due to bacteria, virus, or pollutants
What is the lacrimal apparatus made up of?
-Lacrimal gland
-Lacrimal canculici
-lacrimal sac
-nasolacrimal duct
What is the lacrimal gland?
-produces lacrimal fluid (tears); situated on lateral aspect of each eye
What is the lacrimal canculici?
-drains fluid from eyes medically
What is the lacrimal sac?
-provides a pathway for lacrimal fluid towards the nasal cavity
What is the nasolacrimal duct?
-empties lacrimal fluid into nasal cavity
What is the function of the lacrimal apparatus?
-protects, moistens lubricates the eye
-empties into nasal cavity
What do the lacrimal secretions (tears) contain?
-dilute salt solution
-mucus
-antibodies
-lyzoenzymes (enzymes that destroy bacteria)
What do the extrinsic eye muscles do?
-six muscles surrounding the outer part of the eye
-allows for eye movement
