Structure of the Earth Flashcards
How many layers does the earth have?
4
Name the layers of the earth in order from the centre outwards.
- Inner Core
- Outer Core
- Mantle
- Crust
What % of the Earth’s volume is the mantle?
75%
What temperature is the inner core?
6000 degrees
How thick is oceanic crust?
5-10 km thick
How thick is continental crust?
30-60 km thick
What is oceanic crust made of?
Basalt
Sima- silica and magnesium
What is continental crust made of?
Granite
Sial- Silica and aluminium
What is the lithosphere?
- Name given to the crust and upper part of the mantle
- 150 km thick
- Strong and rigid
What is the asthenosphere?
- Area below the lithosphere
- Made of molten magma which allows the plates to slide
In geology, what does the word “discontinuity” mean?
Is used to describe a surface at which seismic waves change velocity
What is the name given to the boundary between the crust and the mantle called?
Moho discontinuity
What are endogenic forces?
An endogenic process is a geological process that is formed, originated, and located below the surface of the earth. Most of the endogenic processes are folding and faulting.
Describe the inner core.
- Solid
- Made up of iron and nickel
