Structure Of The Brain Flashcards
What are the four lobes?
Temporal lobe, parietal lobe, occipital lobe and the frontal lobe
Damage to the frontal lobe has been linked to what?
Aggression
Which hormones have connections with the pre frontal cortex?
Dopamine and serotonin
What role does the pre frontal cortex play?
Has a role in regulating emotions from the amygdala
What happens if the pre frontal cortex is damaged
Someone is unable to plan long term and unable to control aggressive reactions
What role does the limbic system have?
Self preservation
What role does the hypothalamus have?
A balancing role- regulates our hunger, responses to pain, anger or aggression
What is the amygdala a centre for?
Identifying threat- if the amygdala is stimulated using an electric current the animal shows aggression
What would the removal of the amygdala lead to?
Animal becoming passive and become unresponsive to fear
If there is a reduction in the size of the amygdala…
An individual is three times more likely to commit a violent crime
Supporting evidence? STRUCTURE OF BRAIN
Raine et al’s found murderers who pleaded NGRI had less activity in pre frontal cortex
Low generalisability? STRUCTURE OF BRAIN
Fundamental differences between animals and humans- animals do not have the same pre frontal cortex as humans
