Central Nervous System Flashcards
What is the CNS made up of?
The brain and the spinal cord
What does the cell body contain?
Cell nucleus
What is attached to the cell body?
Dendrites
What do dendrites do?
Receive messages from other neurons to trigger action potential
What is an axon?
A branch of nerve fibres that connects the cell
Body to the end of the neuron
Where are the axon terminals
At the very end of the axon
What is a terminal button?
They store neurotransmitters
What is the role of a neuron
To pass messages between neurons using neurotransmitters
What is a neurotransmitter?
Chemicals that pass messages from one neurone to the next
Where are neurotransmitters stores and released from?
Terminal buttons, they are released into the synaptic gap and taken up by dendrites
Give an example of a neurotransmitter
Dopamine- associated with pleasure feelings, associated with addiction
What is the process of passing the chemical message from one neuron to another called?
Synaptic transmission
