Structure of skeleton Flashcards
Remember definition of terms
Articulate is another word for…
Form
What are the 5 main functions of the skeleton?
Support, storage, protection, movement and RBC formation (red blood cell).
What is compact bone tissue?
Forms outer layer of all bones and most of structure of long bones. Found where strength and load bearing is needed. Protection/ support to bone/s around it.
What is cancellous bone tissue?
Network of bone tissue where shock absorption is required. Diffuses movement through the bones.
eg Carpal bones.
Long bones are…
longer than they are wide. Act as long levers for movement.
Diaphysis is…
the thicker, elongated part of the bone.
Epiphysis is…
the end part of a long bone.
Short bones are…
near equal in length and width, weight bearing and mostly cancellous bone. Forces move through short bones.
Flat bones are..
thin plates of compact bone, some cancellous. Offer protection and areas for muscle insertion. Have diff. shapes
Irregular bones..
don’t fit into any bone class as they vary in shape and function eg vertebrae.
What is the axial skeleton?
Bones comprising the skull and vertebral column (rod through central torso.
What two things make up the skull?
cranium and facial bones.
The divisions of the vertebral column include…
cervical (throat) , thoracic (chest), lumbar (pelvic region), sacrum and coccyx.
What is the sacrum?
triangle bone in lower back.
What is the coccyx?
known as the tailbone. The vestigial tail.
