structure of skeletal muscle Flashcards
structure of skeletal muscle
muscle cells held together in bundles by connective tissue
allows the ability for adjacent bundles to glide over each other as they contract
structure of skeletal muscle fibres
each muscle cell/fibre is an elongated cylinder with many nuclei
- around the cell is a thin plasma membrane: sarcolemma which contains cytoplasm that is called sarcoplasm
what is a myrobfibril?
a thread-like structure found in the sarcoplasm
structure of myofibril
each one composed of many smaller myofilaments, made of proteins which are involved in contraction of muscles
two types of myofilaments , what they do?
thick myofilaments: myosin
thin myofilaments: actin
the thick and thin proteins slide past each other in a manner that shortens the myofibril
sarcomeres
the contractile unit of skeletal muscle; consists of actin and myosin
