Structure of an Atom Flashcards
What is an atom?
Basic building blocks of matter, and cannot be chemically divided by any means.
Atoms are composed of what type of particles?
Protons, neutrons, and electrons.
What particles of an atom are in the nucleus?
Both protons and neutrons.
What is the charge of protons?
Positive
What is the charge of electrons?
Negative
What is the charge of neutrons?
Neutral
What is the nucleus?
Central core of an atom containing protons and neutrons.
What is the atomic number?
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
What is the atomic mass?
Total number of particles in the nucleus of an atom
How to solve for neutrons?
Round up the atomic mass and subtract by the atomic number (protons)
Solve for the number of neutrons in Potassium (K)
20
Solve for the number of neutrons for Zinc (Zn)
35
Number of electrons in Silver (Ag)
