Structure of a long bone Flashcards
1
Q
Articular cartilage
A
Articulate= form a joint
deepest layer of cartilage is calcified and therefore firmly anchored to bone
2
Q
Epiphysis
A
At extremities of bone, includes articular cartilage + compact and cancellous bone deep to it
3
Q
Diaphysis
A
Hollow region of the shaft, compact bone
4
Q
Metaphysis
A
Cancellous bone between epiphysis and diaphysis
5
Q
Epiphyseal Plate
A
- Growth plate; cartilage between epiphysis and metaphysis
- Where the bone continues to grow in length until puberty, when the epiphyses fuse to the rest of the bone
- Important to recognize on radiographs
6
Q
Periosteum
A
- tough, fibrous membrane surrounding bone
- continuous with muscle and ligaments; anchoring them to underlying compact bone
